I'm planning to do a section hike from Rt 9 south to Rt 2 in Mass next weekend. Any high water issues I need to be concerned about?
Dogpaw (AKA J. Marshall)
We got off easy in the north, but it's a mess in the south. Not much wind damage, but the flooding is still on going. Roads washed out, bridges gone, rivers and streams over their banks. Heard there were people that parked in a commuter lot in Richmond this morning (hours after the storm passed) and their cars were washed away a couple hours later.
Water levels should be back to normal by next weekend, but access via roads and bridges may be an issue. Try this-

Check right before you leave to get the most up to date road closures.
Lots of roads and bridges are out. Rt9 from Bennington to the trailhead was not open earlier this AM. Manchester to Rutland is currently not possible on Rt 7. Check later this week.

I'm heading out for 4 days this weekend on the LT, should be an interesting trip...
I'm trying to get back on to finish my SOBO thru tomorrow, anyone know if it is possible to get to the USFS Road 10 trailhead?
I was going to start a thru-hike this weekend, but it sounds like I wouldn't be able to get my mail drop to Inn At LT. I'll wait another week and keep my fingers crossed. Sounds like a lot of carnage in the past few days. I hope this doesn't screw the state too much in the long run.

Vtrans crews are working hard to fix roads and are doing an impressive job, hopefully more of the accesses to trail heads will become operational again soon...
Any word on trail conditions? I'd imagine that they are generally fine but has anyone actually seen any issues on trail?
Uncle Tom (http://tjamrog.wordpress.com/ ) is in the far north right now, and should have some updates on trail conditions soon. Green Mountain Club has a lot of info also. http://www.greenmountainclub.org/news.php?id=258

I was on my section in Mass from Rt 2 to the VT border Monday. No issues, Sherman brook was lively, but within it's banks. As other posters have mentioned, the roads are a mess. To get to the LT/AT trailhead you'll have to go north on 100 from Clarksburg, MA. Rt 9 between Bennington and Wilmigton was closed in two places. Check both GMC and VTrans before you goCosmo
Reports from the MA border to Manchester.....trail is in generally good condition. There are a number of blowdowns on both sides of Glastenbury.

Mass. rte 2 has closures between Greenfield and Williamstown. I91 southbound is closed between Greenfield to two exits south (near Sunderland); the 20 minute drive Greenfield to Northampton took 50 min. There are other Mass. road closures in the Berkshires. This makes access to the southern end of the LT more complicated.
Here's another site for VTAOT-

It's supposed to be easier to navigate than 511 and updated more often.
As of today 01 Sept the Green Mountain National Forest has been officially closed by legal order. This prohibits all entry except for authorized work crews. Whether this will be actively enforced remains to be seen. There is no projected date for lifting the order. The information on this is at the USFS GMNF website. Just wanted to pass this on as it may or may not alter folks plans for the upcoming week or two.
