trail conditions

I was going to go south for a few weeks starting from Route 73' but VT got hit fairly hard this past week. Any recent info on the trail, washed out crossings, ect? TIA Mark S

This report states the Green Mountain National Forest is Temp closed.... Forgive my ignorance but would this mean that the Long Trail is closed down too?

yup.. if the national forest is completely closed.. it's a safe assumption that the Long Trail is closed too in that area. Possibly many of the stream crossings may be impassible.

No hikers allowed in the area. I'd say all bets are off on the Long Trail for the immediate future. Looks like a disaster up there. My plan was to start this week, but for some reason I wasn't in the mood to do it this year. I decided on a short hike here in VA. Guess my intuition was right...

Yup, I switched my Manchester to Hanover hike to Hanover to Crawford Notch, given the choice I think that Vermont is a good place to stay away from for the balance of 2011.

These words make me sad. My fingers are still crossed that I can at least get a weekend or two of hiking somewhere in VT before the snow falls. It sounds like the trails on Mansfield are not too bad, so if I have to settle for a day hike, I'd take it.

There should be some good hiking in parts of Vermont by later this month, just check on conditions before you go.
Probably right now is too soon. The state is working hard to open up as much tourism as they can by foliage season.

I'd planned on hiking VT 73 North to Canada starting last weekend but had to postpone ... talked to a few people up there and they all said it's "closed" for now, even going up to volunteer for clean-up, I was told for now they want to get the roads fixed without traffic (per town officials, which makes sense for the damage they had). Keeping options open now and checking status.

Just Hiked SOBO from Canada to Jonesville, Vt. (88 ish miles) and the trail, while difficult, is totally fine. There are some blow downs, branches and leaves, but nothing too terrible or unpassable. Obviously all of the water sources are fine, very tasty and darn good! To the south is where most of the devastation lies. My thought and prayers to those in Vermont who have lost a lot in these floods!
