What weighs more, a pound of feathers, or a pound of lead?
a pound is a pound?
they both weigh more.
The lead will pack down smaller though and has dwr coating.
but you can trim the featherweight along the way(a feather at a time), much harder to do with the lead

Thank you all for setting me straight on this vexing question I stretch every sinew and nerve to under-stand.
Really thank you for all the replies. Especially as one of you brilliant minds observes that as regards backpacking: a pound of feathers and a pound of lead are both heavier. I hadn't thought of that. Yes, I know this rings true for me; I grasp this viscerally in the low back. And further, I gotta agree: few grasp the true gravity of this situation. And thanks for the suggestion that it is not weight at all but mass I should consider. Any more thoughts on these weighty matters?
Just take half
