no way he'll "shatter" the record unassisted
Best quote I can recall on similar plans: "I bet against him".
Aside from that, the article is mistaken in suggesting he average 60 mpd. If he looks to break JPD's record by 4 days, he will need to hike 2180 miles/43.5 days = 50 mpd (roughly). Starting in late Nov thru western ME and NH. Yeah, good luck with that.

Best of luck to him. I think however he will run into a large storm of reality. His odds of beating her record unassisted at this time of year is less than 1%.
Lead, Follow, or get out of the way. I'm goin hikin.
......................Ho, hum........................(yawn)................. .......yet another......................."world beater"..........................wannabe.......... ...............Immediatly upon completing his quest he will set out in search of............................................a life?
I hope he enjoys his hike..........

Not surprising though, it's about the right time of year for the next batch of "record attempts" to start coming out of the woodwork.

[QUOTE= His odds of beating her record unassisted at this time of year is less than 1%.[/QUOTE] That seems WAY optimistic to me.

Lost his job...lost his fiance....leaving Nov 10....lost his mind.
He won't make it out of the 100 mile wilderness. My prediction.
He'll be lucky to make it to the summit of Katahdin, right alone Springer.
Has anyone checked his gear list link on the news story? That tells the begining to his end right there....
I will purposely not remember his name. But i wonder why I dislike turning backpacking into a competitive sport so much. Also there's no ball so how can it be a sport. Is this guy a hoax. the 100 miles in November can be mainly snow and it wont be warm. It must be a hoax.
Also it will be DARK out !
It isn't really the 100 mile wilderness that's the big problem. The 100 mile can at least reasonably be hiked this time of year, and at a decent pace. It's what comes starting with the Kennebec and continuing another 300 miles or so south that's the really big problem.

I guess my AT trail maps are outdated since as of this morning the nearest distance between the trail and Shippensburg (his first re-supply) is eight miles, make that eight miles the way the "crow flyes" . . . more like 12 via road. Of course, the Cetral PA section of the AT is rife with trail angele stations in January.
well he either deleted his facebook or blocked me... so sad I was hopping to keep track of him and maybe bring him cookies in Monson
