I the Northern hemispere the moss will grow on the North side of a tree, this will help you find north on a cloudy day.

If you are lucky enough to have a visible half moon in the Northern hemisphere ......follow the straight edged Side of it downward with an imaginary line to the horizon and this should indicate which way is South.

Well, if you have enough clear sky on a starry night, you can also use the Big Dipper's outside edge of the 'cup'--formed by two stars to project an imaginary line to Polaris, the pole star. Drop another imaginary line from Polaris to the horizon to locate true North. All courtesy of Boy Scouting in Canada ca. 1958-61.
