The long path runs from the palisades 300 miles north to the adirondaks.
Different trail.
hikerboy is right. Long Path and Long Trail are two different trails.
Long Path - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Path
besides being a totally different trail, the long path is very much a work in progress and not very pleasant to thru hike as a big section in the middle has a serious routing issue that hasnt been, and may never be, properly addressed. at the moment the recommended route for "thru hiking" the long path takes a detour of probably in excess of 100 miles, partly through NJ using the AT to get around what at the moment would be a long and dangerous roadwalk. this area is between schunemunk mtn and the 'gunks. the detour leaves the LP in harriman and rejoins it in the 'gunks by using the AT and the (relatively) new shawangunk ridge trail. i tried my hand at hiking a part of the SRT this summer. i suppose its unfair of me to hate an entire trail of 40 or so miles because of one 2 mile bit, but man did those 2 miles suck.
so yeah, that has something to do with it.
