Not on the trail but a great town to stay in before hitting the trail none the less.

I agree with Easyhiker...a good place to crash before your starting day.

Dahlonega is a "cute" town with a small historic square, but there is not much for the hiker...unless you want to stock up on trinkets and small gifts. It is fun to walk around the square and people watch though and there is a great chocolate shop on one of the corners, as well as an icecream place. The outfitters that used to be on the edge of the square is shut down and is now a coffee shop. The Smith House restaraunt is a stones throw from the square and has family style, AYCE meals. They sit you at large tables with strangers, so it is communal in nature, though a bit pricey despite casual atmosphere. Hiker services are spread out and you are a good ways away from the trail. You can get there from Woody Gap or Walasi-Yi but it is far from the trail! If you are looking to resupply, there is a super Wal-Mart on the edge of town off Hwy 19. This is the road you would be coming in on from Woody or Neels Gap. If you stay there and have access to a car, go to the Oar House restaraunt for a GREAT meal. Very, very nice place to eat, gourmet yet casual on the river and really probably the best place to eat in N. GA. Definitely requires a car though.

If you are trying to get to a town from Neels Gap by far the better solution typically is going into Blairesville.

We found this to be a tough hitch, maybe becuase it was our first time hitching, anywhere, but we ended up with three seperate rides to get into town. Once there, though, the Super 8 motel was cacoomodating, Pizza Hut delivers, and there is a McDonalds in the parking lot. Wes Wisson will shuttle you back to the trail in the a.m. if you arrange it ahead of time.
