RI's North-South Trail annual hike series of section hikes

For you local folks, mostly.

The NST runs along western RI on the Connecticut border and is 78 miles long. The first hike is March 10 this year. I got an email from the coordinator and thought I'd pass on some general info on the trail. The trail is mostly on woods and secondary roads with a few longish sections of woods walking and, of course, very few hills.

Anyone who's interested in participating can send me a personal message for details.

Each hike will be between 11 and 16 miles on easy terrain.

Dates of other section hikes: 3/10/12, 3/24/12, 4/7/12, 4/21/12, 5/5/12, 5/11/12.

These are all dayhikes. There is only one official "wilderness" campsite on the trail, but there are private and public campsites nearby and a motel right on the trail at one road crossing.

Will there be photos? Being a RI native, the trail has always been on my mind in some small way. A buddy and I were supposed to hike it in '99 before I moved out here, but a sticky and hot July dissuaded us.

Always thought a 4 day trek of the NST would be nice over Columbus Day weekend.

Carolina Canoe campsite, about 13 miles from so. terminus is 1st reasonable site (supposed to be for boaters only, but is 100 ft. off trail).
2nd campsite is in Arcadia Mgmt. area, north of Rte. 102, mile 32.16.
3rd night is a motel right off trail on Rte. 6 Stone House motel, at mile 53.07
4th night is George Washington Mgmt. area off Rte. 44, mile 66.39
End of trail is at mile 77.3
There are others listed in the book, but these are right on the trail.

First of six hike series of day hikes is in the book. My knee still hurts from 2 weeks ago in Harriman when I hyperextended it when a Microspike slipped a bit and then dug into some rotten ice. Gout in big toe is better.
Microspikes heel plate is a bit narrow. I found it somewhat unstable with my Asics trail runners. It's probably better with a stiffer shoe.

Day 2 is in the bag - 14 mi. over varied terrain incl. 4 mi. on paved roads. Day 3 is two weeks from yesterday and is my favorite part of the hike. The trail runs along the Falls River and Stepstone Falls and is mostly in the woods.
