the iphone4 takes amazing low light picture. My daughter used hers inside Carlsbad caverns, and blew my pics from a point-shoot digital camera away. They were similar to my wifes digital SLR pics.

Great external battery for iphone at a ridiculous price ($6.10!) Won't charge it all the way but will get it from 20%-80% or so. Only weighs 2 oz I'm bringing 2 or 3 with me since I plan to be using my iphone for a camera, journal, mp3 player, etc. I'm a techno freak and I know some purists will disagree with it but it's a tool for enhancing your own hike and sharing your experience with everyone else while helping to preserve the memory of your journey for a life time

Looks good, but its not clear if it will work with an iPhone 4S?

I think it would work for the 4s, but the reviews for it were about 180 5-STAR vs. 100 1-STAR reviews-a little too shaky for me. I went with this one (below), it costs 40 vs. 6, but can perform 2-3 charges vs. 1, and the reviews are much higher. It also has a built in LED light.

I think you will be happy with that model. I was looking at it as well. That light would be nice for the tent or shelter. I think the light would be much "calmer" than your headlamp.

Also look at a double USB electrical adapter such as: http://www.amazon.com/Cellet-1000mAh...ref=pd_sim_e_5

It would allow you to power up both your phone AND power unit at the same time.

Most point & shoot just a few years old require a change of settings or mode for low light. One mistake I have noticed is most slam the button down and force a blurry pic - not taking into account its a two position switch... Take the same cam into a low lit room and slow squeeze the trigger - the computer / light sensor engages then complete the snap... Picture should dramatically improve.
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

I'll be thru hiking this year (march 19th start) and will be journaling and taking pics. My solution for the whole iPhone/point and shoot camera thing lies in this nifty SD card called an Eye-Fi card. It essentially creates a secure wireless hot spot from the card that is in the camera. You can then connect to it with your phone and upload the photos you took during the day. This way I can leave my phone off all day and only turn it on at night to write an entry. When I email them out I will be able to attach a photo that I took with the camera. Since the phone has 32gb of storage, I only need one 4gb sd card. In my test hikes it seems to be working well.
