I carry a journal on every hike. I write down so may quotes and thoughts that I come across during each hike that I could write a book here. I'll ponder those thoughts and quotes during my entire hike and take those journals out off trail to reread and ponder those same thoughts many times over. I'm going to keep saying it - THRU-HIKING IS NOT JUST ABOUT HIKING!

I enjoy aphorisms (pithy/old sayings) and the sometimes redundancy or conflicts between them, and in that context I came up with this one:

"Don’t burn your bridges before you count the unhatched chickens on the cart that’s before the horse."

Of course, then there are all the counter-aphorisms for that set, such as "A stitch in time saves nine", "Look before you leap", probably others (?). Fun stuff. Aphorisms are like statistics, insofar as you can seemingly always find one to demonstrate what you want to demonstrate (which generally is an after the fact observation that someone else should have acted differently).

as you are now, so once was I.
As I am now, you will be.
