Yes I do always carry a rain jacket. There have been times in the mountainseven in the summer when I am glad to have it not so much to stay dry but to keep warm.

in May or June? absolutely bring rain gear. Course I live in New Hampshire and I just noticed you are in Maryland. So rain gear is more important for me than you. Put it this way.. if temps are in 80's or 90's you'll probably get as wet from sweat as you would from rain if you didn't have rain gear. If temps are in 40's 50's and 60's ( and here in NH it can easily be in 40's or 50's even in June) then the rain gear may be necessary to prevent hypothermia.

A rain/wind shell is one of those "never leave home with out" items which should always be in your pack, regardless.

I always carry a rain shell. In warmer weather it's usually my only jacket, and so it's useful around camp when it cools off at night. There have been plenty of occasions when a warm early summer day turned into a cold afternoon thunderstorm. I've also spent entire weeks on the trail and never used it, c'est la vie.

dress for the temperature, bring an umbrella
Except for farther north, as mentioned, the temperature can easily dip then it becomes a matter of safety.

i always bring a rain jkt(Marmot Mica)its also my windbreaker, and regardless of daytime warmth, ive been in the mountains in july and august where the nighttime temps dropped into the 40s.its an extra layer, doesnt weigh much at all, and id rather have it and not need it than otherwise.

Would you backpack 3 days without a water container? You can die after 3 days without water.
Would you backpack 3 weeks without food? You can die after 3 weeks without food.

And since you can die of hypothermia in 3 HOURS even in May or June, yes bring the rain jacket.

I don't mean to hijack the question, but my debate is whether to bring the wind/rain jacket for my thru-hike starting April 19th, and leave behind the wind shirt and poncho? Or vise versa? Seems the wind shirt and poncho combo is more versatile, and I have a nano puff for warmth when not hiking. I can't decide!

If you're using a poncho-tarp as a shelter then that's probably ok if you're a warm hiker and the weather doesn't do anything odd (big 'if's')

If your rainjacket weighs more than poncho+windshirt maybe get a new rainjacket.
