Water Purification

Was looking at Water Purification tablets-was surprised to see that some of them take up to 4 hours to be ready?? iodiende still only takes 5-10 minutes- which is better to use
did check out the steripen classic and Katadyn Hiker thats all they had at Dunhams sporting goods store
I only have walmart and dunhams in my area --have to drive 60 miles to dick's sporting goods

Give Aqua-Mira drops a try. Simple solution and treated in about 15 minutes. I started with a filter and finally switched to drops. Nothing to clog, no batteries needes and essentially the same chemicals used in most water treatment plants.

I agree, I love my MIOX. But I'd heard they weren't being made anymore. How recent is the website you linked? If I heard wrong, I'll sleep better knowing I can replace it if I manage to break it, which isn't easy.

Aquamira is Chlorine Dioxide which is moderately effective on crypto and very effective on Giardia.

According to the same site chlorine dioxide (aquamira) has a high effectiveness against giardia and low to moderate effectiveness against cryptosporidium. It's the popular chemical solution among hikers. I also like the Katadyn Hiker Pro, especially with the quick connects. Unfortunately it's real heavy for a thru hiker. The vast majority of cryptosporidium outbreaks are through fecal contact. Your chances of getting crypto at a higher elevation are slim except near livestock areas. Water coming from an underground source has a very low chance of Crypto. Chlorine Dioxide will inactivate crypto but can't be relied on because the dosage would be more then the normal 7 drops of each part of Aquamira per quart of water. Filters are great until they break/clog. I use a filter in eastern North Carolina because between the pine tannin and Fisteria the water needs to be filtered.

I hadn't heard that before, do you have data on that?

What are you using to get pine tannin out because even my First Need purifier leaves that stuff in?

What are you using to get pine tannin out because even my First Need purifier leaves that stuff in?

Katahdin Mini Pro - The Water goes in brown and comes out clear. The filter clogs faster. I get maybe 20 gallons out of a filter, but in hog country the water is not safe.
