Just noticed that we have been joined by Henry Shires of tarptent fame. It is amazing how this site has attracted so many people with so much knowledge on hiking. From Baltimore Jack, SGT Rock, Warren Doyle, The Weasel (who is by the way missing in action!) Hammock Hanger, Peaks and a couple hundred more. If a hiker needs to know something and can't find it here they should stay on the porch!
This site gets better every day.

Thanks for the welcome and the kind words re:Tarptent. I grew up in the Boston area so am familiar with the AT but have really only done day hikes and short overnight trips on the trail, mostly in New Hampshire. I've become very westernized since moving to California partway through high school and now spent every chance I get hiking the West. I do miss winter snows but the Sierra is close by and the hiking is unparalleled.
