    Default food storage

outside of traditional hanging, i wanted to know if any many or most of the shelters and sites have bear boxes.Ive slept with my food in the whites and mahoosucs without incident, and i do use bear boxes when theyre available. im heading SOBO from K august 3rd and im not really worried about bears, just critters, and though i might be alone for the first week or so on the trail, would probably feel more secure not sleeping with my food . when im in the 100 mile wilderness, i dont need a hole in my bag when im carrying the most food.

I don't remember seeing bear boxes any in Maine.

Re. the small critters, the most bothersome place for me was Rainbow Stream Lean-to. For most of the hike through Maine, I hung the pack with food from the shelter hooks as did most other hikers with no problem but at Rainbow Stream, the mice were persistent. Ended up tree-hanging the pack in the dark.
