Yikes....more sad news.
Happy Lifetime Sectioner!
2 backpacks there, odd.
Thanks Lone Wolf
oh man,he we go again, one body two packs, somethin stinks.
Oh, I thought is was a reference to Marsha from the Brady Bunch. You know it always Marsha, Marsha, Marsha. I guess I am showing my age on that one.
When I first read this I was thinking of Dismal Falls, but just realized that is wrong, should have been thinking of this
If below Dismal Falls I am guessing drugs and or alcohol. Popular spot.
Both my memory and John Gault's photo recall that the area was very rocky. Perhaps the victim slipped, fell, cracked his head. In any case, very sad story.
The article clearly states, "Laurel Fork Falls" and doesn't mention anything about Dismal Falls, which is quite a bit north. The only reason I was thinking Dismal Falls is because (for whatever reason) that location was pictured in my mind as I read the story.
It wasn't until later that I realized I was visualizing the incorrect location.
From an article in the Elizabethton Star
A body was recovered Wednesday afternoon from Laurel Falls near Hampton. The Carter County Rescue Squad and Carter County Sheriff’s Department have been at the scene since about 10 a.m., when a body was discovered floating in the water.A second person is missing, according to investigators. The Elizabethton STAR has had a reporter on scene and will have additional information and photos in Thursday’s paper.
As I was driving into work this morning they said on the radio that hikers had discovered the body and they were looking for a second based on having found two backpacks near by. We had seen the rescue squad at the trail head heading up to the falls as we were going to the lake yesterday. Dunno at this point if the person/s found were day hikers, sectional or what.
Just thought others might want to know.
I've a hiked that area many times and up on those cliffs near the top of the falls almost every time. One would be pretty daring to jump from there. Of course, I could see how a morning swim would be unavoidable after a hot night. Sad to hear. They said on the news that they had been on the trail for several weeks. Maybe there was a journal in the things. The absence of the other person is worrisome because I can't see how they wouldn't be found there if they had also drowned.
