Take in mind I Backpack in the Northeast and am getting ready to start a section hike of the AT starting at Springier Mt. later this September to Fontana Dam about 160 mile hike with my Lab. With that said this is what I typically would take on a 3 day backpack in northern New England this time of year. All items with a * means I've used this item on passed trips.

There is nothing right or wrong about your setup. What matters is what is right for YOU. Some of us here at WB could whittle this down to below 6 pounds without water but only if you were interested in being uber-minimalist. On the other hand, we could also explode this to over 50 pounds if you like having all the creature comforts of the Hilton in your backpack. Could you tell us what your goal is with regard to your pack and how it would impact your hike (speed, mileage, comfort, camping, etc.)? This would help greatly with giving recommendations.

Hello Farmerchief, I'm only looking to enjoy the AT not to brake any record or even finish at this point, Just looking to start it without making it feel like a job. Would like and am trying to get my pack down to 30 lbs. For the past year I've been trying out new gear finding it doesn't work so back to the retailer to replace items. My base set up Pack, Tent, Pad and cooking items are set as low as I'm will to go. I'm now trying to work out all the other items. I can see were I may be able to shave off 4 to 5 lb. Like the 38 mm and the radio, I have the bear spray if need against the two legged threats and the cell phone for weather and back up light probably can do without the camp chair through it is nice to relax in after a long day on the trail instead of pull up a rock. It will be a work in progress. After my start at Springer to Fontana Dam I'll see what I could live without.

Thanks Moose2001, Ya agree with some of your list I will be on trail for about two weeks will need to change why'll doing laundry so extra t and under shorts with shorts would be needed. I'm not sure that others in the laundry mat would take to me hanging out in the buff. I have cut the list a bit more to save about 4 lbs.

By the time you reach Mountain Crossings, you will have an idea of what you need and what you dont. They will help you send the rest home.

You don't need bear spray and bear bells. Just keep a clean camp. Moose had it about right on the stuff you don't need (though I did take q tips). Don't take double if stuff, plenty of places to buy along the way. G p s not needed on the AT. Take maps.

I would do away with the rain coat. A $1 rain poncho from Walmart should suffice and will lighten your load. If you worry of it tearing, buy a couple extras. These are very light and should last you a while, if you don't bushwack or get right up on the tree branches and bushes.

That JetBoil weight jumps out at me. If you want to stay with a canister, then a GigaPower or Pocket Rocket would save you a ton of weight. A grease pot works well enough for cooking in, or you could get a small non-stick pot.

If you decide to go with mostly dehyrdated food or FBC, you can simplify even more with a SuperCat stove.

A long-handled spoon is all I've ever needed for eating. The larger camp towel is a luxury you might consider leaving behind.
