    Default Fontana to Smokemont

Planning on doing the BMT from Fontana to Smokemont mid-October. Is this a good time of year to go, and is 5 days reasonable to make this trip. Thanks

Yes on both counts. It shouldn't be hot at all, and that is plenty of time to do it in.

Let us know the blowdown situation, I'd like to know.

Half of that hike will be on the Lakeshore Trail - probably won't be a blowdown problem there.

Our President hiked the Twentymile trail in July, after we had a report of over 20 blowdowns, and found that the Park Service had indeed got it cleared.

Right now the worst section I can think of is outside the park. There is a section north of Choah Dam and south of Deals Gap that was badly overgrown with brush that has grown in after a forest fire.

Had a great time on the hike. There are indeed several blowdowns on the Lakeshore Trail, a few of them are pretty large.
