Default Long Trail SOBO: Getting to the Northern Terminus

I want to do a SOBO hike of the Long Trail this fall. I've read the End To Ender's guide, searched AmTrak and Vermont Transit and, as far as I can see, there is no mass-transit way to get anywhere near the Northern terminus of the trail. Is that right? Is there some form of transportation I'm missing?

The closest I can see is either Montpelier or St Albans. In either case, it's at least an hour to Troy by cab. I can't imagine what that would cost.

The guide does list some people who give rides, but I'm loathe to ask someone I don't even know to travel that far.

    Any ideas?

Guess most people go South to North. Or don't read this site.

Anyway, I ended up deciding on taking a bus to Montpelier and then a cab to the trail. 60 miles. That's going to cost something.

Coming back, I'll end up in North Adams and take a cab to Pittsfield and a train to Boston.

It's a shame the Vermont Transit discontinued service to the Troy area.
