I have an REI Kimtah Jacket but need a warm layer underneath

I posted this on another part of the forum but it seems like here gets more action!

Hi everyone. Like the title says I have a the Kimtah rain jacket and now I'm looking for a layer to keep me warm. Right now I have an older Campmore polartec fleece. It works well for training but I wondered if there was something better to take with me, something that takes up less room in my pack maybe. I'm a bigger guy 6'1" 288 lbs and I have to wear XXL stuff so please keep that in mind. Yesterday I was out hiking in a hat, gloves, a capilene long sleeve shirt and the polartec with my pack on. It was 35 degrees and I was fine.
