Summer Assistant Position at Bears Den Trail Center and Hostel
The Bears Den Managers are seeking an assistant to live on-site and help host hikers and other guests at the hostel and Trail Center. The position lasts ten weeks during the summer of 2013. Bears Den is a hostel and campground on the Appalachian Trail in northern Virginia, operated by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and owned by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Preference will be given to someone with a desire to serve others, as well as a knowledge and love of the outdoors, the Appalachian Trail and the hiking community. Flexibility and the ability to get along with a wide variety of people is a must. The assistant will live in a community setting and work alongside the managers.
Time in this position will be spent primarily in two areas:

  • Housekeeping and Trail Center upkeep
  • Welcoming and hosting guests

Responsibilities will also include the following, depending in part on the skills and interest of the applicant:

  • Performing outdoor lawn, garden and trail maintenance
  • Assisting with on-going improvement projects
  • Camp store and cash register operation
  • Helping the managers as needed

A modest wage and lodging will be offered for this 10-week position. Exact start and end dates are somewhat flexible but will fall between May and August. Must be 18 years or older to apply.
