Default Bear Encounter Roaring fork 2008

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjACFd24tno

I was just wondering if this situation could of been handled better.

Could you throw rocks at the bear? Would that just make things worse? Would that be legal?

One thing is for sure, the guy with the tent should have brought his tent in the shelter when he decided to move.

My brother is currently hiking the AT and just finished the Smoky's. Naturally my biggest concern has been making sure he knows what to do if he encounters dangerous wildlife. I went on the GSMNP website and found a video that explains exactly what to do and yes, if a bear continues to approach you, throw rocks or anything that might scare it. http://www.smokiesinformation.org/hi...ifesafety.html

First off, that was no 400lb bear. Secondly, you kill him with one of the many logs laying around. Silly city folk...

If you'll have hiked the AT (and this was pointed out in the video) there are many places on the AT where one cannot find an optimal place to hang food, if there's such a thing as "optimal" since some have had food stolen when hung and not just by bears. It's the food hangers that are conditioning these bears to human food and the foolish ones that display fear around these animals to give them the idea that we are no threat and thus can walk around camp with no consequence.

Many here just don't understand nature, in nature there are no courts, in nature might makes right. Futhermore, I know they are very much stronger than us, but they don't look at strength the way we do. They very well know, from dealing with viscious animals that are much smaller than them that simply because they are bigger they can have a fatal encounter with a much smaller animal. They need to see us smaller animals as a threat. But thanks to all the ignorance out there, they are seeing us as pansies not to be feared.

Thanks for posting the video. I wasn't going to carry bear spray but now I think I will. I'm going to keep some rocks handy too.
