It says ski poles will be allowed. Trekking poles are always confused as ski poles by townies. TSA is about as townie as you can get.
And walking canes have always been allowed, the trick is to make your trekking poles look like a medical device instead of sports equipment. Take the baskets off and cap the tips and voila you have a medical device.
I'm really surprised they are allowing at least 2 golf clubs to be carried on, but I wouldn't consider trying to bring on 2 pointed trekking poles unless the rules change to specifically allow them. I'd be really pissed if they confiscated a $100+ pair of good trekking poles. Otherwise, I have not heard of any changes. I've become so frustrated with flying and prefer not to risk my equipment with the occasionally dishonest baggage handlers.
A few years ago I flew with bamboo poles, and TSA was so paranoid that they confiscated them, suspecting drugs or explosives in the bamboo sections. But I'm sure all they found was .... air.
Effective April 25, you will be able to take your hiking poles and small pocket knives on board air planes (just tell them they are ski poles, not hiking poles)

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Good news for backpacker's flying about. Pocket knives (6 cm long, 1/2 inch wide) and "Sports Sticks like Ski Poles" - (Trekking Poles, too, I would assume), allowed for carry-on use.

Cool, now I don't have to sharpen the edge of my credit cards anymore
As an FYI, I am flying home for my dad's wedding and a short break from my thru hike. I called TSA before heading to the airport and was informed that this new update to policy has been delayed, and is not in effect yet. Luckily Joe at Four Pines Hostel was nice enough to let me leave some stuff there so that I didn't have to check my pack. Great hostel, by the way.
From what I see the small Swiss army knives are allowed and very small fold-able non locking blades knives. As for hiking poles, It seems they are OK now but I am not going to pretend they are ski poles in the middle of summer when I am flying south. Actually the picture is showing that telescopic hiking poles are OK when the new law is officially in action.
Swiss Army knives and ski poles are still prohibited from carry on luggage. They were going to ease restrictions, but backed down in the face of opposition from fear-mongers.
The current list of prohibited items can be found below. Swiss army keychain knives aren't allowed, but you can carry a screwdriver provided that it's less than 7" long...go figure...
