Default Durango to Molas Pass/Silverton Transportation

Some friends and I are looking to hike from Segment 25 (Molas Pass) to Durango. However, we'll be flying into Durango and need to get ourselves to Silverton/Molas Pass. The train is expensive and the schedule is far from ideal. Any suggestions for getting from Durango to Molas Pass via any other kinds of transportation? Thanks in advance!

This site quotes $20 pp for the economy ride.

Other people on different websites have suggested them, too.

Thanks for the tip PMags! I am planning a similar trip, but will take the train to Silverton, so we just need a ride from Silverton to Little Molas Lake Campground. We'll spend the night at the campground and start on the trail the next morning. Thanks for asking the question Mike -- you must have been reading my mind!

mou10mom "will take the train to Silverton"

In case you didn't know, train willing to let you off at the CT, their Elk Park 'upon request' stop, nixing your need for Silverton-Molas hitch. But you wouldn't get to see Silverton.

There's a transportation service out of Silverton- I don't know the exact name but they could be a reasonable option allowing you take the train.

From Durango, you could try High Up Tours + Transportation. Their rates to Silverton start at $140, should be a few bucks less to Molas Pass. I know they've done bikes shuttles up there before.

I don't know anybody in town that would charge as little as $20/pp from town to Molas though. The company Mags listed starts at $144 to Silverton.

Anyone wishing to get off of the train at Elk Park:
If you can get to Silverton, the train ride to Elk Park is about $80 cheaper (depending on number of free days in the parking lot in Silverton) and a shorter train ride than going north to the same stop from Durango. The Backpacker Special out of Silverton at the train web pages has the details.

The hitch from Silverton to Molas pass was probably the easiest of my thru hike. I declined a ride on the back of a motorcycle and then got a ride in a car immediately. Super friendly town.

The information was correct at the time.

We did that section last year and used Buckhorn a couple times. Very professional service and we were thankful for their 24/7 schedule. Seems like it was $60 or $80 for a shuttle from Durango to Molas Pass. That was for two people. So, $40 for two people three years ago was probably right.

Durango is a small, friendly town full of recreational fanatics. Hitching from Durango to Molas is easy. Hitching from Silverton to Molas is easy. Going via the train costs more, but is really a great experience. Just do it.....

BTW, Buckhorn is a good reliable service. I used it to get from Durango to the airport but it was like $40. So not cheap. I didn't want to try to hitch from Durango to the airport.
