YMMV: Your mileage may vary. AKA, what I'm describing works for me, but it's certainly not the only way to do it.

You guys are forgetting the most important one: PoHo. Some would say POHO.

Maybe KoKo. Then KoKo could be a PoHo.

    ATC: Appalachian Trail Conservancy
ALDHA: Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association

And here is a link to the list of regional Trail Maintaining Clubs -- they have acronyms folks might have heard of:

    http://www.appalachiantrail.org/who-...ntaining-clubs

Some of the more prominent ones are:

    MATC: Maine Appalachian Trail Club
    GMC: Green Mountain Club (Vermont)
    PATC: Potomac Appalachian Trail Club
TEHCC: Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club
AMC: Appalachian Mountain Club (some of New Hampshire and Maine)

This last one is sometimes referred to by less understanding hikers as the GDAMC . (just a joke, folks)

Some places get abbreviated because no one wants to have a go at trying to spell them, like:

    Big K - Katahdin

    Others I can think of:

GSMNP - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
VVR and MTR - Vermillion Valley Ranch and Muir Trail Ranch, both on the JMT/PCT
IM(H)O - in my (humble or honest) opinion
    Vitamin I - ibuprofen
GG - Granite Gear OR Gossamer Gear
    HMG - Hyperlite Mountain Gear
    HH - Hennessy Hammocks
MYOG - make your own gear (I think)
    MHW - Mountain Hard Wear
    SMD - Six Moon Designs
    MLD - Mountain Laurel Designs
