    Lightbulb Whiteblaze.net Chatroom

I'd be surprised if this hasn't already been suggested but is it out of the realm to set-up a real time chatroom?

    Pro, cons? Troll, Rock?

Good idea. But if it's not part of the package, then it might mean more moola.

Wingfoot had a great chatroom six or seven years ago. I learned more on that chatroom than I could ever imagine. Being able to talk directly to other hikers provided a wealth of knowledge, a few disagreements and alot of great exchanges. Of course Wingfoot had to dominate the chatroom and any oponion that disagreed with his was delt with surgical quickness. I was thrown off once when I challanged him but he let me back in a few weeks with no explination. He threw Weary off wnce and alot of us were upset and tried to get him back but Wingfoot was dificult for a while. In a chatroom enviroment you have to allow give and take with mutual respect.
When Wingfoots site went belly up Rainmaker started a great chatroom at Yahoo ATTrailchat. The site is still active but the chatroom sort of died out. I think the only reason it died was because Yahoo kept screwing it up. Speaking from my experience members frequently couldn't get in or suddenly in mid-chat Yahoo would shut down. People slowly stopped visiting. The chatroom is still set up but to this day I can't get in, Yahoo blocks me even though the administrator has tried to fix the problems. Whiteblaze is the best thing that has happened to AT Backpacking since beer so I can appreciate it even though there is no chatroom. It would mean extra work for the administrators and they are diong a great job now so if it never happens I will understand but it sure would be nice to chat with all of you. One of the greatest thrills I have had is meeting some of the folks on the trail I chatted with in the past. If it never happens I will understand, if it does happen I will be here every night.
<this is me if a Whiteblaze chatroom ever happens!

Nah, just set up a WhiteBlaze Yahoo Group. They have chat free, and the membership would be approveable by Troll and Rock.

As a matter of fact, I just set up WhiteBlazeDotNet at Yahoo Groups, and will give it to Troll or Rock if they're willing to take it. I'll also dissolve it, if that's what they want.

I just thought that someone with other than our best interests might do it after this suggestion.

Edit: I seem to remember hearing that Yahoo shut down user-created chatrooms a week or so ago, due to kiddy-porn freaks and their insanity. I don't know if this applied to the group chatrooms.

Ideally, I'd like to see a room linked from this site with a small window where I could still browse the boards.

Prior to TrailChat, but only open to members, AOL used to have Backpacker Chat which was awesome and a tremendous help. Monday Nights was "Long Distance Hiking" hosted by Frank Logue. Occasionally they had special guests like Dana Gleason and Dick Gregory. Maybe we could get Coup or Ray Jardine?

if it's too much hassle or costs money I can understand....

wbdent Oh Boy. This subject came up a long time ago and I tried to find SGT Rocks and our response to it on here but it looks like it might have gotten deleted.

    1. If we started had an online chat program then we were afraid that people would start using the chat program and not posting messages and questions in the forums. For example if Attroll asked the question “How to remove pitch from a Silnylon tarp”. People in the chat room may know the answer and reply and then Attroll would have his answer and be happy with it. But then everyone that was not in the chat room the night that question got asked would miss out on the answer. To some this may not be a big deal but there may be some that would like to know the answer to this. If it was brought up in chat then it may never get posted in the forums.

    2. Another reason is that we would be responsible for everything and everyone in the chat room. Unless SGT Rock or I was in the chat room monitoring it when ever it was open then there would be no one to take responsibility for it. I for one and I am sure that SGT Rock will agree with me but I don’t have the time to take responsibility for maintaining a chat room. I have a very busy schedule and taking care of the web site is pretty intensive sometimes by itself.

    3. Like Sly mentioned that if the chat link was going to be for WhiteBlaze members it would be better to have it here linked to the web site. I would not want the WhiteBlaze name on a chat room run by someone else other then WhiteBlaze.net. But a chat room can be added to this forum software. I have done it before with this software for another web site I maintain. But that is a different story. Although I am not for it at this time I think it would be awesome if we could get people like Frank Logue and others that Sly mentioned to host something of this type.

    4. Another issue would to be keeping some of our wise a$$e$ from logging into the chat room and being a problem and spoiling it for everyone else.

I suppose we could turn this into a chat thread. No porno or swearing.

It's hard enough to keep up with the Posts and Picture Posts here on WB. I don't think I could fit a chatroom in. Probably best to leave well enough along.
