Angry Writing with a Sharpie on signs

I was out trail running today. I ran from Elk Garden up to Briar Ridge. I noticed someone had written on the privy door at Elk Garden and then had written an expletive on one of the signs at Deep Gap with a sharpie/permanent marker. I thought I noticed writing on the signs around Summit Cut/just North yesterday when I ran that section.

Has anyone else noticed writing of this sort along this section of the trail recently? This person needs to be stopped if they are walking the trail writing on signs.

The new rule is that you say you are sorry and didn't know any better.

    Then keep hiking.
The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.

WM was referring to several heated threads that have dealt with the subject recently. I suggest you do a search for a thread with "Rifle" in it, and after you read all 30 or so pages, you'll understand my comment

Rifle carved his name but I don't think he used a sharpie, did he? Apparently there is a guy out there using a sharpie, trail name- Movie Star.

Topshelf.... This person needs to be stopped, for sure.

maybe i just dont get it

but I hate when people write on shelter walls too. Let's just all scribble our names and obscenities on everything we see on the trails.

Much like the shelter vandals, I think that a group of concerned folks Sharpe the stuff of the offending person....see how they like it. (Though I don't condone this.)

You can only do that if you have hiked three thru-hikes.

I hate to admit it, but I've considered this idea as a way of self regulating the vandalism...

.... For the sake of argument only, I envision a trail where an army of trail enthusiests carried sharpies which they would not use for any reason except to write the words "Is a TOOL!" next to every graffiti tag they crossed, just imagine the reaction when the jackasses that are doing the vandalizing found out that all their handiwork that they had left on thousands of miles of trail had all been turned into a form of public shaming.

Outlaw all Sharpie brand markers now. That's the answer.

When Sharpies are outlawed, only outlaws will have Sharpies....

    Something to consider.

I think some have forgotten, or did not know, the beauty of the pristine AT was a place to get away from ghetto graffiti. So Sad.
