    Default Skunk attack??

I've heard rumor of a hiker who was bit by a SKUNK [May 2013] while tarp-tenting along the southwestern VA section of the AT

Has anyone else heard about this??

Does anyone know more details as to where exactly it occurred?

Seriously, that would be a rabies risk, I hope it's not true.

Very true, Skunks are very docile, and they do carry rabies, and would have no worries about approaching a sleeping hiker looking for food....this awe inspiring moment can often turn bad.

Yes it took the guy couple of months and several hospital visits to get over it.

awe is not quite the word I'd use to describe a meeting with a skunk. It certainly isn't the word I use when I drive past one that bought it. Ewwwwww.

Yup. People tend to be way, way too scared of animals. But if I were bit by a skunk I'd be concerned about rabies for sure.

Any bite from a skunk should be considered an exposure to rabies until rabies tests are negative.

I can't remember which one but I was reading Skywalker's or AWOL's book and they talked about a skunk coming up in a shelter and sleeping on top of their sleeping bag one cold night.

skunks are docile until you piss them off, then they hold a grudge
