Yea, people have to remember, the dog is there because of you. The dogs come before the owners. The water was a idiot move.
Other times I see hikers that have dogs with 10 pound packs.....idiots. while my dog loves his pack and it keeps him safe from hurting himself against trees and thorns and Sharp rocks......he only carries around 4 pounds total, including the pack.
I carry all his food, except for that days worth.
Anyways, glad the dog is okay, the owner should have been given a good beating for being an idiot.
This hiker does not deserve his dog!! He didn't have to hike. Once the water was spilled, he should have turned back. It was obvious that he drank what water he needed. So MORON HIKER, if you are reading this: Because your dog has now had heat stroke, he will ALWAYS be predisposed to having heat stroke in the future. Check with your vet if you do not believe me. So please. Show your dog you really care and leave him at home in the future. You may kill him on your next hike.
That's sad.. glad the dog is OK.
So If I understand correctly.. the hiker had one bottle of water.. spilled it.. and then kept hiking with his dog in an area where there is just no water? How insane is that. And yes.. Dogs are Dogs NOT people. How selfish/stupid can a hiker get??
Well, I am just delighted that the pooch was treated as a human would be with rescue available. I would like to believe that the same response would have occurred anywhere along the trail. Big smile.
You never know just what you can do until you realize you absolutely have to do it.

The hiker should be charged for the cost of the rescue.
The dog should find a new owner, someone with some common sense.

My thoughts exactly!!
I will second (or third) that! Nothing ticks me off more than someone who abuses their pets. And this WAS abuse.
I only hike near water when it's warm outside to keep my black lab wet for his comfort, It's a small price to pay for such great company.
