This is a good article. But what bugs me about it is this: "he said, hand sanitizers do not combat norovirus. A bleach-and-water solution is needed to kill this particular virus".

Then duh, he doesn't tell you how many parts of water mixed with bleach, is necessary. Dumb, DUMB reporter. That's the first thing I would have asked the physician epidemiologist.

Sounds like there are carriers among them. It will be interesting to see if this malady makes it all the way to Mt. Katahdin.

Do they keep passing the bottle around with the bag of gorp and finish it with a community bowl?

Hmmm... Going out tonight for a quick weekend trip... I guess a small bottle of bleach is getting added tonight just in case. If nothing else I can hand it off if I see a thru.

THanks RS... It could have gone the other way 2. The way Chin was describing the situation... it seemed to be really bad. I really hoped it wasn't the case, for the hiker's sake. Robin aka Violet told us that she was at one shelter, in the south, tenting. She said you could see puke on the ground as far as the eye could see. She was lucky and didn't get sick. She got out of there, fast.

I didn't touch any thing in the shelters on our hike in PA. I stayed out of most all privies. I love to read the log books but I didn't touch them.

My medical experience says that it has the potential to be carried all the way to Katahdin. The winners are hikers who are immune by now due to being affected earlier by the virus and now they don't have to be worried to be affected in a warmer weather anymore( ChinMusic ) and hikers ahead of the affected bubble of hikers.

The real winners of coarse are hikers who never get ill by being cautious and smart and avoiding the virus.

If I have a choice to catch this disease in colder weather rather than warmer one ,i certainly opt for the cold weather.

Not really. I have never gotten sick in the Rockies. Never filtered nor treated the water either.

Thanks for this info. I'm hiking but N of these areas. Still, I think I'll stop using the privies and do my thing in the woods. Which is worse, risking deer ticks on my butt or the Norvirus??

Its probably the orgy afterwards that keeps the virus going.

I'm just so confused. I thought hikers getting sick from norovirus was just an unsubstantiated internet rumor being spread by cyber hikers and fear mongers.

Now I don't know what to think :screwy:

Well it was... Just because something is later confirmed doesn't justify the spreading of rumors initially. Maybe for some the ends justify the means, but in my mind that's not good practice.

Either way, in this case the info is out there now and how it got out there doesn't really matter anymore.

Reading this makes me concerned about the advisability of our planned PA section hike later this month. I was very much looking forward to having Snacktime meet some thruhikers, but now I'm not certain it would be wise to expose him (or myself) to a potential virus. We're not planning on staying IN shelters, but does anyone know if it's a surface or airborne contagion?
