About 550 miles driving to Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mts--that's bad. About 18 miles to Ozark Trail near the Current River and the Ozark National Scenic Riverways--it's something.

An hour or so by car. I lived off RT 4 when I was growing up and drove up to Rangeley quite often. I can remember getting excited seeing the hiker trail signs when I was a kid and thinking how cool that was. I can almost see the AT from where I grew up, or at least the mountains the AT crossed, like the Presidential Range

Our retirement property in Tennessee which we will be building a cabin and hostel is 2 miles from the AT "as the crow flies." To drive would be 8 miles to New Found Gap. We are right across the street the GSMNP and across from highway 321 near Gatlinburg.

2.5 miles from Mt. Oglethorpe, the original terminus of the AT, 15 miles south of Amicalola. I would be happy to show hikers around the new park that has been developed around the old summit.
