Practically on it. Less than a mile.
    Just ignore it

Not fair to all of you living so close! Use to live in Georgia. But moved west, then west again, then again. Now it takes me 16 hours of good driving to reach the trail. Usually break it up into two days of driving. So 4 freakin days for a round trip. Then average a 50 mile section hike. Im gone for over a week. But sooooo worth it!!

About 12 miles to Sam's Gap on the NC/TN line. I often hike the trail after work for the exercise, but usually hike other trails on the weekends.

Nope, You must not have been up north for awhile, the pulp mill which made the odor was closed about 14 years ago and was torn down almost completely, the old site is now a wood fired power plant (no smell, except fresh wood chips). Folks are flocking up to Northern NH for Ride the Wilds http://ridethewilds.nhgrand.com/. There are also a few whitewater rafting companies in the area. Hard to get reservations for a hotel north of RT2 on weekends most of the summer and into late fall. ATVs are not my interest but there sure are lot of folks from down south that are. Luckily the ATV crowd spends a lot more money per capita than hikers so the local tourist businesses are happy. Add in the Balsams Project and things are definitely on the up swing (but Berlin still has a deep hole to dig it self out of but they are doing it slowly.)

At various times in my career, I've worked in the field in every part of NH other than the Keene area. Met some of the nicest people in some of the poorest areas of the state. Glad to hear Berlin is improving, even if it's slowly.

I live in Cumming, GA close to the the start. Once the flood of people is over (March-April) you can get some good day or weekend hikes in. Once I almost kept going. Husband would have been PISSED.

2hr drive. Would be cool to live right off the trail...maybe someday.

Too far to get there more than once or twice a year. About 500-600 miles from Springer through PA. Further to the northern sections.

With my latest move to the NY's Finger Lakes region, the closest AT point is Duncannon - 205 miles. At least I'm closer than my previous abode.

But I'm only a few miles from the Finger Lakes Trail!
