:banana General Info regarding the Pinhoti

The Pinhoti is a 324 mile trail going through two states, Alabama and Georgia. It starts near Sylacauga Alabama (either Flagg or Rebecca mountains depending on where you recognize the southern terminus to be) and ends where it intersects the Benton MacKaye in Georgia. The Alabama section (about 182 miles) is almost all woods trails. The Georgia section has significant road walks. The Alabama section is a mini Appalachian Trail. I do not find the Pinhoti as difficult to hike as the AT because the ups are shorter. But, it is not flat land hiking. The Pinhoti has long sections without water, sections along creeks and lakes, walks through valleys and walks along mountain ridges. It is long enough to require resupply but situated such that short hikes are possible. It has loop trails, shelters and a lot of wildlife. The main difference between the AT and the Pinhoti is the traffic. The Pinhoti has much less traffic and you can go several days without passing another hiker. Check it out!!!

The question I get most often is about section #3.....road walk or woods trail?
Other than that it is still the best description I know of.

Yeap the http://www.pinhotitrailalliance.org/sitemap.html is the best resource for general trail info, and I see he has redone the snailtrail info for section 3.

Here's a few links to my hikes on a few sections on the Pinhoti at alltrails.

And more photos from the hikes and some of the loops that include parts of the pinhoti in the Cheaha area.

It might, or might not, be part of Great Eastern Trail: http://www.greateasterntrail.net

It was so considered by these folks who started at Flagg: http://www.gethiking.net

So how do we get a Pinhoti avatar on the main Forum page?

First off welcome all of you Pinhoti refugees. Maybe ask Attroll about the avatar for the forum page.
