    Question Tarp Size

I am interested in buying a Hennessy Hammock (Ultralight A-sym Bacpacker) and was wondering is the upgrade on the fly size worth the extra pound? Is the stock fly large enough to cook under? I am in the process of going ultra light (I am buying a GG Vapor Trail!) and I think the extra pound for a little more coverage isn't worth it.
So if you guys can pass some of your knowledge this way that'd be great.

    Thanks

Check out the 8' X 8' silnylon tarp from JacksrBetter. Weighs about 9oz and the seam is on the diagonal. Gives you a little more than 11' coverage (end to end) on the HH and only requires 2 stakes.

I would definitely get the oversized fly...I got it and am very glad I did. It is big enough to sit, cook, etc under, or to use on its own as a tarp. Click on my site and then click on "Miscellaneous Pictures". There are hammock pics (a couple showing the difference in sizes b/w the standard and oversized fly. It will give you a visual idea of the size difference).

The standard fly is the light green one, the oversized one is the dark coloured one....

Good call on the tarp. I used an ultralite Hennessy Hammock between Harper's Ferry and Caratunk, Maine. I always got wet during the rain. I wish they would add three ounces to ensure that the fly can cover you. Since I am in California now, I cannot use the Hennessy. If I do return to the East, I will definitely buy a tarp.

I think it's pretty much a given that the small fly for the original HH was too small. That said ...that small fly would work as an awning over a tent or as a "dining fly" between 2 trees. For that purpose it's just about the right size.

Bankrobber, why can't you use a hammock in CA?

HH has different sized tarps, and Tom will deduct the cost of a stock tarp if you upsize to a larger one...you only pay the difference.

Trees are not thick in California like they are out east. Finding two close enough to set up a hammock can be tough. Also, there is a considerable amount of above tree-line and desert terrain. I guess one could string one up between two Joshua trees, but I doubt it would be the most stable.

And if I remember correctly it would end up in a large fine if you were caught.

Tying off to a Joshua Tree. We have to always give them lots of space at NTC.

Guess it depends on which part. I just moved to Monterey and don't have a problem here. Quick daytrip to Big Sur and it looks like I'll have plenty of trees to tie off to...gonna do an overnighter in 2 weeks (after midterms).

Anybody hiked Yosemite with a hammock?

I like my JRB 8x8, too. I've only compared it to the stock HH fly on the BP UL A-Sym, though...it's MUCH more comfortable living under the JRB than the stock fly. Haven't personally compared it to the hex or MacCats or 8x10 other than seeing it on other folks' hammocks, though.

    Um...if that's the skills you're talking about...
