Sure looks nice and inviting in a picture. I remember hitting this shelter in August 2003 and wanting to sit, take a break and read the shelter register. The mosquitoes were voracious and I lasted all of 5 minutes before booging on. Guess it might have been all the moisture we had in 2003.

    Default Not-so-happy hill

I stayed here June 23, 2005. The mosquitoes were still horrible!

    Default Home Sweet Shelter

If you took away the mosquitos I could absolutely live there. Never been there but I imagine it will be waiting for me in '06.

I got there late in the day in in June 2001, the mosquito's were a royal pain, I put deet and natrapel on me and they still would not leave me alone. I finally set up my my little tent and went to sleep, I know the shelter is there because of the good water supply, and in the winter time there would be little wind because of the terrain. But, it either needs to be relocated to a place where there is a breeze or designated a winter shelter.

I strongly advise people not to stay there during mosquito season, period.

I suggest putting a link to this thread from the Vermont Shelter forum.

Default Any recent news about mosquitos at Happy Hill?

Anyone stay there in June '08 or in June this year? Were you eaten alive?

    Thanks!

That's a much nicer shelter than the Happy Hill Cabin which it replaced. I stayed at the latter in the 1990s while doing that section.

Stayed there last Tuesday night on a short section from Hanover to Killington. Had no bug problems. Despite the wet weather never had to use bug dope on this section.

It seems to me all of southern Vermont has fewer bugs this year, even black flies. Maybe they were all waiting for naked hiking day yesterday and there are naked bloodless hikers out there as I type this.
