A man told state police he got cold while hiking the Appalachian Trail and broke into a motel room in Upper Tulpehocken Township for a cozy night’s sleep. Police were called about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when a woman returned to her guest room along Route 183 near Strausstown and discovered a man, later identified as Robert E. Sloand, 65, sleeping in her bed. Bethel Township police responded and detained the man until state police, who have jurisdiction, arrived from the Hamburg station.
Sloand was charged with burglary, criminal trespassing and loitering and prowling at night. He was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail after arraignment before District Judge David E. Glass in Reading Central Court. Sloand, who is from Carbon County, said he was trying to hike his way to Harpers Ferry, W.Va., by way of the Maine-to-Georgia trail, parts of which are along the line separating Berks and Schuylkill counties. He said he got cold and was trying to get warm, troopers said.Facebook
