Default Speaking of paying for lighter tents ....

Was comparing the standard Copper Spur at the usual discount to the platinum

    Normal: http://www.backcountry.com/big-agnes...g&gclsrc=aw.ds

    $337

    Platinum

    lists for $600

anyone know what the functional differences are?

the pictures might be wrong for the platinum on that link.
The plat is half a pound lighter (trail weight) and is all mesh for the tent body on the BA site

I wish Campmor was the least bit competitive. I fondly recall their paperback catalogs coming in the mail with the "savings" section...still have a few Campmor brand fleece 1/4zips...25 years old now....

STP is my goto. Almost always get the additional 25percent off and free shipping with the daily emails...they've always made good on their mistakes and their return policy doesn't suck...I've got a box of 3L Camelbacks that I scored for $15 each....a drawer of Terramar boxer briefs that set me back 5 bucks a pair...that kind of dealio does exist at STP...they had the MH GhostWhisperer HOODY for $135(retails $350...) recently....

Campsaver has done good in the last 6 months....

REI garage is a nice online outlet.

Thanks. I like free standing tents for multiple night camping when I have to set up and take down a lot.

Almost a hundred dollars off, makes a big difference.

Etc. You know how it is, trying tents out, returning some, borrowing others, getting used to the idea of shaving off a pound here and there.

in case you haven't ordered yet, i got a big agnes fly creek ul2 with mtnglo for only $299.95 and it appears to be lighter than the copper spur at only 2 lbs 6 ounces. maybe give it a consideration. btw i got mine from backcountry.com with zero problems and free shipping!

Thanks. The Fly Creek isn't quite completely free standing though. Or am I mistaken?

It's 'Free Standing', but to get the interior volume, you have to stake out the side walls.

I'll add basegear.com to the list. I've bought from them several times with good results. Recently scored a BA CS1 mtnglo for $259 with free shipping. Shipped promptly and arrived in 2 days.

Not sure what this reason has to do with "free standing" tents, have you used both?

Anyway, I've been a long-time owner of the BA FC, worked great for me for many years, I personally have zero problem with the entry/exit thing that many quote as their reason for not liking it. That being said, I did recently buy a BA Copper Spur, the newer model now being only 5-6 ounces heavier than my older FC, and the CS is superior for a couple, certainly, and it's my wife's favorite all-time tent. It certainly has more useable room than the FC. But a FC UL2 is still palatial for one, if that's your use. As HKDK just pointed out, the only "non-free-standing" aspect of the FC is that you have to stake out the two back corners and the sidewalls to get all the room it has to offer. This takes, what, 30 seconds tops?

Also I've bought a zillion pieces of gear from BC.com over the years, no issues at all.

Some places I've had trouble getting stakes to set.

Sorry I wasn't clearer. Hiking with my wife is the tent application.

Go with the Copper Spur then, sweet tent. REI garage has them on sale.

That's where you use rocks instead.

On my JMT thru, there were a few times I was basically setting up on a rock slab (actually quit comfortable when you can find a depression in the rock are filled with sand). No way stakes were going into a block of rock with a 1" sand layer and simply had to tie the guylines to a heavy rock. Even had to do that in a few awkward places in GSMNP.

Plus, just like the Fly Creek having to get staked out to get your internal volume, you still have to stake out the Copper Spur... at least for the vestibules if nothing else.
