    Default Seeking Hiking buddies 2012

Hey I am interested in attempting my first thru-hike starting in the south in April. I intend on starting slow and working my pace up. Im a 28 year old artist based out of Carrboro and am super laid back. I would love to have some bad ass companionship along the trail if anyone is interested in starting off with me. I will be preparing my gear, etc. over the winter...if youre a rookie too, perhaps we can combine forces, resources and work out the details together?

I am out of Raleigh and same first timer. Old guy though, and will be slower than you. I am just going to section hike, see how far I can get in 2 weeks. April 8th is my planned kick off date. I retire from the fire department in 2017 and will finish the section that I have not done by then with going as far as I can each year in two weeks until then. If you leave around 8th we may hear about each other on rail. Have u worked out details on how to get to Springer yet?

I'm heading out end of March/beginning of April and certainly qualify as a rookie. Would love to have someone to bounce ideas-plans-questions off of as my family and friends are probably tired of discussing EN ratings of sleeping bags and tent options.

I am a rookie too and will be beginning my thru sometimes in March, just noticed that the 19th is a full moon. That would be a cool time to start. I will be very slow too as I am old as dirt and have bad knees. When it is closer to my kick-off, I will decide if I want a buddy or not. I am liking the idea of being on my own, however. I will just play it by ear. I am considering putting a Whiteblaze.net patch and a Texas patch on my backpack. Maybe even an Aggie patch.

Hey Barking Spider- I am a 27yr old female based out of Ft Lauderdale. I wouldn't consider myself an artist, but went to art school. Haha. Plan to start my first thru-hike the end of April 2012. Starting late but have been waiting 12 years to do this, so better late than never. Currently researching and purchasing gear little by little. Would love to compare notes some time. When in April are you trying to get to Springer?

Super laid back but seeking bad ass companionship . . .

There will be lots of hikers on the trail in Apr. April 1st of this year there were 49 thrus and 35 sectioners on Springer (Apr 2nd there were 55 and 94 - it was a Saturday). You won't be alone on the trail. I would say that it does slow down quite a bit as the month progresses though.

(and just to let you know - Barking Spider has been used as a trail name before, if you are planning to use that as a trail name that is - don't know if that matters to you or not).

Good Luck and Have Fun! Oh, and to WB!

    See you on the trail,

I'm planning my thru-hike for mid April, 15th? or so. I'm new with long distance hiking but am so excited to just keep walking and live the adventure. I'm 28, female, and hope to meet interesting, nice people out there. It's encouraging to see other females my age!

Hi Spider!! Im a 33 year old female planning to start the 1st week in April. I have a little hiking experience but would definately consider myself a rookie. Im planning to start out slow too (7-8 miles per day). Ive never planned for a hike longer than 5 days and have some serious reading/planning to do!! If your still looking for a "Bad Ass Companion" Im pretty sure I would fall into that catagory If there is a group of y'all starting at the same time Im up for that too!!

With a trail name like "Barking Spider" you might have a bit of trouble finding hiking companions................
    Just sayin'
Good luck on your attempt. I might run into you (or at least someone with your trail name) along the way.

    Barking Spider,

I have section hiked parts of the trail and am finally taking the big step next April for a thru hike! I wouldn't say I'm a rookie but I'm not a professional either I'm a 39 year old female from Columbus OH - not in prime shape but working on it.

It's true there will be a lot of people starting out at first but like you I wouldn't mind having a few people to stick close to in the beginning to help each other. I've never hiked by myself and even though technically I know there will be plenty of company out there - it's still intimidating.

Feel free to PM me! Would love to talk to you about your trip planning.

I'll hike with you. Private message me. We'll go at whatever pace you want. I can push you, pull you, or just hang back and chill out. Being that you are planning an April thru-hike start, you'll have plenty of company -- more like a gang. If you want to go on a warm up or gear test hike in March, let me know.
