Is there any place to hammock camp at Overmountain Shelter?
Is there any place to hammock camp at Overmountain Shelter?
I hung mine in the loft.
I am not young enough to know everything.
yeah......and ive seen one guy hang his on one of the downstairs pad/porch type thing.......
Great view to wake up to.
yeah.....
i can imagine.......i had planned on staying on one of those pads until some guy spilled a huge bowl of noodles right in the middle, no more than 5 minutes after watching a mouse run across it......
in a way, im glad i didnt stay there at all........there were already 14 people in there, and when i decided to go up to one of the humps, another 10 were coming in......
All of the above are pretty routine for the big red barn. Lots of bigger groups, seems to attract a more....inexperienced crowd. As well as in the barn, I have seen many people hanging directly behind the shelter. Last trip I did the Roan Highlands I moved on past the barn, over big hump to Doll Flats. Only 1 other group was there, a pretty view of the fields, nice water source and plenty of spots for hangers.

Ive hung behind the "field" next to the shelter. Up in the tree line on the slope
Thanks for the info. I am also planning on possibly moving on to Doll Flats as well. I'd rather camp where less people are. Hopefully there won't be too much foot traffic next week.
Plenty of spots in the treeline, back out at Yellow Mtn Gap, and down along the FS road.

You should at least stop by and check out the shelter and view. Its pretty cool
That's definitely the plan. I've heard it is really cool and great views. Depending on how many people there, I may stay.
It was used as a movie set for filming "Winter People". A cabin was built next to it for the movie but dismantled after filming.

If weather is good, take look at barn, but go a couple miles further and camp on humps.
Overmountain had my favorite privy of the Trail, especially for a sunrise visit. Sun comes up straight ahead, over the far ridge, it was a magical moment! Worth a visit
