Popular with weekenders who park down at Gulf Hagas. Roomy with good water, but mice, chipmunks, and red squirrels very bothersome. Named after a wonderful longtime MATC volunteer. Carl Newhall built several lean-tos in Maine, including Logan Brook and Frye Notch.

"[ATers] represent three percent of our use and about twenty percent of our effort," retired Baxter Park Director Jensen Bissell.
Is there a fee for the use of this lean-to and is there tenting allowed around it if it is full?
no fee, couple good tentsites just south of the water source
thanks plan on hitting it July 10 late in the afternoon and didn't want to have to walk all the way to the next campsite if it was full being a saturday and all.
It has more moose poop per sq. ft. than any other shelter on the trail.
Watch out for the phat rat singing "spill the wine, eat that squirrel"!

PS. don't eat the confetti.
I had the most wonderful (multiple) experience there but can't tell you about it, this being a family type site and all.
...and NO, I wasn't alone!
