conflicting info, this report says Friday 10pm, the other "early saturday"
shut it down now, save everyone the same ole BS that these threads go through.
Most people can separate the wheat from the chaff in this kind of thread. IMO.
Its important that this report gets shared with as many people as possible.
The thread should not be shut down, it should be revisited frequently do that hikers who have been in the area or will be headed there can consider the information.
Is it posted on the ATC site yet? It should be. Or perhaps not since Troy is far north of the AT?
I just wish I was there and caught the guy. I know what I'd do to him.

"Conflicting info," as you call it, is actually quite common in the early reporting stages of a story, when cops are releasing little to no info. Doesn't have anything to do with anything.
I'd like to hear more about this. Interesting if she was, in fact, able to scare off an attacker by merely saying she had a weapon.
Stick to the topic at hand, and maybe we can all learn something from whatever took place here.
I agree....very tasteless to make light of this..
And yet ANOTHER reason to be armed( doesnt have to be a gun ), willing and able to defend one's self if forced into the situation.....male or female... Scaring somebody off simply by telling them that you have a weapon.......Well she is very lucky that he wasnt a determined attacker.
Absinthe.......It's not just for breakfast anymore.
"The man was scared off when she said she had a weapon"

Topic: Hiker says she was attacked in lean-to.
Boston.Com: she [said she] was attacked by an unknown male
BurlingtonFreep: Woman allegedly attacked on Long Trail
FreepArticle: looking for a man who allegedly tried to assault a woman
FreepArticle: when a man tried to attack her.
So somebody "tried to attack her." What does that mean? Did he swing at her with a hiker pole? Did he verbally threaten her?
up over the hills, theres nothing to fear
theres a pub across the way with whisky and beer
its a lengthy journey on the way up to the top
but it ain't so bad if you have a great big bottle o'scotch
Ya know what?....In Arizona if someone " verbally threatens you "..and you feel that the person doing the threatening means to do you harm.....You can legally use defend yourself....by whatever means necessary....Aint Arizona grand ?
Absinthe.......It's not just for breakfast anymore.
Keep it respectful and on topic, or this gets shut down.
Thank you.

Update 6/2/2009: Ben Rose, Executive Director of the Green Mountain Club, reported that a staff member of the GMC had a phone conversation earlier today with the law enforcement officer involved.
He added:
"The alleged incident took place at
Shooting Star. The investigation is ongoing, and there will likely be
more details available next week. It is fair to say, based on the
investigation thus far, that this is believed to be an isolated/confined
incident."
Thanks, GMC, for staying on top of this for all of us.
Shooting star is pretty far out in the woods. I'm surprised something happening way out there. I don't think there is any road access within miles of that shelter.
