Who is meeting at Bear's den? We need at least 2 vehicles left there. Myself and Doggie Bag are meeting there but that will only leave 1 vehicle for the return trip.

    1) Shenandoahs - Jan 17,18,19,20 - NORTH Bound from the Northern End of the Shenandoahs, this is so we dont have to worry about the Parks roads closing on us.
    - about 34 miles total, depends how the roads for start and finish line up.

    2) - MEET AT 9am:
link to Bear's Den Hostel ... also in Bluemont, VA:http://www.bearsdencenter.org/
    18393 Blueridge Mountain Road,
    Bluemont, VA 20135
    540.554.8708

    3) - START POINT: MEET AT - 9:45 at 522, Chester Gap, Front Royal, there is parking on the side of the road. Seems to be the best place.

    - GAME PLAN:
Day one - Start hiking from 522, go about 6 miles to 'Jim and MollyDenton Shelter'.
Figure the short Hike milage would give everyone a chance to eat at the meet point, if they want.

Day Two - Hike 10 miles to 'Dick's Dome Shelter'.

Day Three - A) Hike 8.5 miles to 'Rod Hollowshelter' ..... OR.....
.............. - B) Hike 13.3 miles to some old cabin ruins that might be cool to camp at.

Day Four - A) Hike 13 miles to the finish ..........OR........
    .............. - B) Hike 8.5 miles to finish

Let me know what you think! I am going off of Wingfoots 2007 Thru-book.
Thanks to everyone for the help in making this happen...... going to be another great hike!!!!!!

    Whos in:
    - Wrongway - white S10 stepside
-Doggiebag & Aldo - Pickup truck
    - LastHonestfool - Black/green car
    - Fonsie - Dodge Dakota with cap

It's going to be a little less balmy tomorrow. At least it will be warmer than our PenMar trip from early December. I'm waterproofing my boots and patching some new burnholes in my Wet weather gear. Uggghhh!

My knees still hurting a little, but it's a lot better than a couple of days ago. I just need to pack the ruck and make a couple of sandwiches. I did get a bunch of handwarmers to throw in the sleeping bag. See you at Bluemont at 9:00 AM. I will check the thread before heading out tomorrow.

Fonsie - Glad to meet you, it was a fun 2.5 days. You missed the Roller Coaster - that was pretty cool, not as bad as I thought it would have been but still a butt kicker. Maybe next time we can do the roller coaster from Bears Den to Rods Shelter and back. Just ditch the Rambo knife for a spare set of socks - .

Doggie Bag - Always a good time. cant wait for the new video to come out.

Aldo - Yea I know, dogs cant read (well maybe this one can ) hope the paws heal fast.

AstroGirl - Good to meet yea, I am prety sure you were more comfy in the hammock then we were in the shelter.

Brian, Will, Rob - I think I got the names right, We met these guys at the parking lot after Rt. 50 (?). It was good night, thanks for the help with fire wood at Rod Shelter. It was a cold arse night!! Hope you guys made it to the next shelter in time to get another big fire going!

Thanks to all for a great trip - - awsome time!!!

Aldo was okay, he had a few cuts on his paws from the ice. Nothing too bad - he didnt complain about it. I think it bothered me more then him .

2nd stove..... thats your "thing" now - you have to bring both for now on!!!!

If it makes you feel better, I think it was Rob (one of the hikers we met after you left.......) he carried a hatchet for chopping wood , came in handy and was great to have - as long as someone else is carring it! Weighed more then the rambo bear killing knife you had.

Default The heat wave was nice...

Earlier this month I hiked from HF down to Bear's Den and back, looks like you folks had a much different hike than I did just a bit more than a week later. I was completely floored to find myself hiking in near 70 degree weather for three days straight in early January, but I'll most certainly take it!

Looks like you all had quite the trip though, fresh snow and all! I just started checking out WB and one of the first threads I find is about a local hike (for me), thanks....
