    Default Polymer/geek question

OK science types. Help a knothead. Please.

Under Armour polyester/elastane vs catatonic polyester/lycra.

Marketing? I did the Google thing and was waaay over my head. Near as I can figure it has to do with acceptance of dye, but they are both black.

Could one of you explain this in terms that won't pop my cork? Thanks!

Elastane is another word for spandex. Lycra is a trademark for spandex.

Polyester -- often made from recycled PET soda bottles -- makes it wicking. Spandex makes it stretchy.

That's polyester that won't respond to your questions.

But cationic polyester has been dyed using cationic dyes, which are positively charged in order to be retained better. Or some other such nonsense.

Laugh on me. Maybe I am catatonic.

OK. So it is basic dye nonsense. I wonder what the differences between cationic polyester and polyester amount to...

I must not be the only maroon out there, because I Googled "catatonic polyester" and got this:

    http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3635653.html

and a bunch of other stuff with catatonic in it.

Best not be made from recycled stuff! For $20, them thar polys and esters better be organically grown by vegan monks, and woven by hand.

The polys are, I believe they round them up once a year. There hasn't been an ester born out of captivity since 1956. Shame really, but the damaged ecosystem just couldn't support them anymore.
