Default Woman Missing Near Clingmans Dome

Over on Facebook, there is a report that rangers we're looking for a woman in the area of Clingmans Dome today.

Wondered if anyone here had heard anything... I don't currently see any news stories in the last 24 hours in Google.

    Posted to Facebook:
I just received this info - the lost hiker is the sister-in-law of a co-worker. She is from Cincinnati. "Her name is Susie Clements, 52, an employee of MSD. Susie was hiking with her daughter late yesterday afternoon. Her daughter decided to hike ahead further on the trail, planning to meet back at their car later in the afternoon. When she returned to the car, her mother was nowhere to be found. She has been missing for over 24 hrs. Park Rangers are coordinating the search and asked that all search efforts be coordinated through them. Any help would be appreciated. The meeting location is listed below. If anyone is able to participate, they are meeting at approximately 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning. Local search teams will continue the search at dawn. I know this is last minute notice but I'm forwarding it as quickly as I receive it.

    Oconaluftee Visitor Center
1194 Newfound Gap Rd, Cherokee, NC 28719"

Still no update in my "hike the smokies" group

I hope they find her safe and sound or at least in relatively good health.

    Thanks for the update.
I hope she if found soon.
Weather forecast is wind and rain with temperatures in the 50's... conditions that are ripe for a case of deadly hypothermia if a hiker is unprepared.
At least day-time temperatures yesterday were also in the 50's, so presumably she has some level of warm cloths on.

Thoughts and prayers. People don't realize how rough and rugged it is on Clingsman especially if they drove up to the top in a car. Please keep us updated.

Unfortunately, she's been missing since Tuesday, but fortunately has some warm clothing and a rain poncho.

    I think TNhiker's station in wbir.com.

There are two other network TV stations in Knoxville with the story, wate.com and wvlt.tv.

Heavy rain moving through right now with flash flood watch.

    Didn't see HooKoo's link.

Easy to get turned around up there, especially when visibility is down to nil.

I remember being at Double Springs Shelter when a guy pops into the clearing headed southbound, looks around with puzzled expression then turns back to the AT. Five minutes later he and a companion walk up and ask "how much further to Clingman's Dome?". "Dude it's 3 miles in the direction you just came from, up hill.". Not what he wanted to hear.

while hiking to clingman's dome northbound in the rain last year i encountered a woman who seemed to be visiting from a foreign land in the east carrying only a camera and tripod. when i saw her i said something like "good, i must be near the top." she had no idea what i meant. i asked her how far the top of clingman's dome was, blank stare. i moved on and eventually realized i (nor her) were anywhere near the top when i crossed her path.

many hours later at mt collins shelter two hikers come in by headlamp long after dark. they are with another hiker already there who has been waiting for them and getting worried.

"you guys get lost or something?" he asked.

"you wouldn't beleive it if we told you."

    "what happened?"

"we found a lost asian woman wandering around with a camera who had no idea where she was."

i have a feeling this kind of thing happens often there, though thankfully doesnt normally get so awry.

    because of the search...

however, i dont think they are doing any night time searching....

and i should correct it to say that the Park is closing the road til further notice...

press release says---"to facilitate search-related traffic and parking, the entire length of Clingmans Dome Road will close to vehicles tonight at dark and remain closed until further notice."

Too many people can complicate search. Well intentioned but can interfere with organized search.

Heavy overnight rains make it even more difficult.

For some reason, I can't stop thinking about this story. The picture of the lady and her daughter with whom she was hiking before she got lost really hit home. I think this is an example of how quickly things can go wrong in the mountains, particularly if one isn't prepared.

I am really holding out hope for a miracle here. This is her fourth day now out in the wild.
