Can I just say that when were in Scotland last month and I took a real honest to God kilt off the rack in a store that they weighed so much I could barely hold one up and they were solid wool. You have to remember that the Scots who fought the Brits at Prestopans and Culloden wore kilts and it was FREEZING cold. They knew how to wrap up an extra piece of wool to keep "the boys" warm and they "did na suffer" in the cold. (Yes, I know my history well enough to know that they lost at Culloden - but it wasn't because of their clothing!!) A true authentic wool kilt is a heavy duty piece of clothing that would drag someone my size (think Hobbit) to the ground.

FOR SURE! My kilts are as warm or warmer than long pants with poly pro under and definitely more comfortabe.

With my kilt (Skirt? ) & a pair of winteralls pantyhose, & can hike in windy (50 mph gusts) weather down to at least 29 (per weather report from the flatlands) wearing pants dosn't keep me that much warmer, so why bother, esp since I hate wearing pants.

The OP said it was to have a quick on/off insulation for his legs, to be able to put on easily at rest stops.

No offense intended, do as you wish.
It is not necessary for me to look like a girl to stay warm with all the clothing options available to us today.

I fully understand the principles behind wearing a kilt, I'm just not going to wear a kilt any more than I'm going to wear my hiking pants below my ass & turn my cap sideways.

Yep. When and if I ever get serious chaffing issues, I'll look into kilts. Til then, I'll stick with pants and shorts.

I've never worn them as a blister preventative myself, but I will say that, when worn as an item of women's clothing, I often have problems with my toes punching through the thin nylon. Talk about causing pain and blisters... Some types are fairly sturdy, but some are quite delicate and don't last through even one day's walking around a city as a tourist.
