Default NC 284 (Cataloochee Turnpike) winter status

We made a trip to Cataloochee between Christmas and the New Year, planning to hike the Little Cataloochee trail. When we got to the junction between Cataloochee Turnpike and Cataloochee Creek road, the Turnpike was gated. (Plan B was pretty enjoyable.)

I was under the impression that the Turnpike was a year-round road for the most part (barring weather closures), but the earliest I've ever driven it was early April, so perhaps I'm mistaken.

If you happen to know whether it's currently open, or who I might call to find out, I'd be grateful for any information.

check the Park's website.............along with calling north carolina department of transportation...

i believe parts of that road are Park's responsibility and parts of it are the state's responsibility....

or it might be the county in which the road is in...

there's private land and state land and national park land up there so theres a bunch of agencies involved.....

    disregard most of it........

It was, but the other entrances to the Park at Cataloochee were open.

Having looked at the Park map again, my memory of which parts of the Turnpike were inside Park boundaries vs. outside was a bit rusty. The closure may well have been related to the shutdown.

    Thanks to both of you.
