Did NOBODY read the article cause, while your concerns have merit, the article actually addressed these issues "as they are planning to handle things." And some of you are just idiots. And NO, I would NOT attempt this with a 1 year old and I am pretty sure they will not complete the whole trek.

Wow, Slow down wise man.No need to call any body idiot. I read the article. let's say they think they know what they are doing and have done their research before, that does not mean they are ready for unpredictable things. When I read it the first thing came to my mind was what if the guy who is carrying the toddler on his back ( god forbid) slip and fall. Then I said who the hell do I think I am, I definitely am not interested in the health of the baby more than they are. I read many books on climbing highest mountains of the world and watched every document that is available to me, it still does not mean I am ready to summit them.

perfect timing for me. My daughter just had our first grandchild yesterday... so I got to suggest a thru hike as the ideal first family vacation. They say walking is good for recovery, and it would probably be easier to start with a younger baby, anyway. I suggested that my daughter and her husband take their two dogs, as well... too bad their names aren't Barnum and Bailey...

Thankfully nobody is really attacking the family for being irresponsible and selfish for putting the babies well being and health in jeopardy just to satisfy some selfish need. That would be awful. As long as they have the trek "well planned", what could go wrong. If anything does go wrong they will be within days of help or be able to call for a rescue, emergency medical assistance or whatever. Heck, as nice as most AT hikers are, they could probably get some of them to carry their gear and baby as they rush themselves to the nearest pick-up point for an emergency. Lots of hikers would probably be glad to help them out with food and other stuff. My dog used to get me and him all kinds of unsolicited handouts, well, my dog was probably soliciting. A baby would be like a gold mine.

Sadly, the dingos really did eat her baby...and she went to prison for years for it...damn dingos...

Yeah...a one-year old on the trail....something that baby will remember forever. What parent wouldn't want their one year old to have these memories?

It's not like the parents are completely self-centered and prone to projecting their desires unto their blissfully ignorant offspring...or that they don't blink when placing a 1 year old in harm's way... they've done their research, lot's of Sherpa's take their baby's trekking, right?

This is what I am not sure they have really sort it out . It is extra work in an environment that needs extra work every hour.
How you change the diaper or clean the baby when the mosquitoes are blood thirsty and in storms.
