On page 35 there is a goose down outer wear listing

They show a jacket, rated at 15 degrees, for 69 in regular sizes. Free shipping too. There is an extra zipper for a front chest pocket. No weight listed and no packing size description.

Does anyone already own one and care to take the time to comment?

I've owned some llbean stuff and it was pretty good.

I do not own one, but two friends of mine do. They (both petite women) can't believe how warm they are! They are also pleased wit them from a fashion sense if that means anything.

One more question:

Looking at the detail pictures you provided a link to, it appears this garment is more of a "real coat" than a cheaper alternate to the Montbell down inner jacket.

The loft of the down appears twice as thick as a Montbell down inner.

Would you agree with that?

Yes! It is a winter coat and NOT for say late shoulder season hiking or throwing on when stopped for a quick break in winter. ( I use a similar Montbell Thermawrap for quick breaks in winter during the day)

A fair bit warmer and bulkier than a thin Montbell down inner coat. Naturally, it is heavier, too.


This photo is one of the people I mentioned above. It may give a better idea. IIRC, it was -5F or so (maybe even -10F as it was well into night during a cold snap) that night. When moving, she was warm. When stopped, she was cool (but not cold).

IF you can't tell, we were sledding so wearing the coat in the big, bad, wilderness of the Boulder sled hill was not a problem. (The hot cider after was quite nice, too!)

mags i've been trying to convince my gf to get a down jacket, but she's afraid they make her look like the michellin man. how's this jacket in the 'poofyness/not flattering' aspect?
also, how far down the hiney does it cover? girls don't liek jackets that stop at the waist

Well, the two women I mentioned like it, but I also live in a very active outdoor area.

When I wore my Thermawrap around town, I rec'd compliments.

(Mind you, people wear Sorels around town when it snows too!)

When I wore it a month after my CDT hike (it was clean by then. ), the family back East basically said "What the frig is that?". (Actually, they did say "What the frig is that?"...)

You can't escape total "poofyness', but I think my two friends looked just fine in theirs..and they are not cold! The jacket comes down to the hips somewhat, but maybe not for the coverage your GF desires.

Now, for covering the hiney, it is a jacket so it does come down to the waist. You'd need a coat vs a jacket to get the total hiney coverage. Most coats look "classier" but are probably not as suited for practical outdoor use. OTOH, if your girlfriend just wants something nice for around town, the coat (vs. a short jacket) is going to be better.

BTW, this one look lighter then the above jackets, appears to go down to the hip and a bit more fashionable (and less poofy) than the $69 one. May be a good compromise between something practical and and less Michelin Man like.

i have had it with all the favorite suppliers of outdoor wear! i am pissed that
they never have my size, which is a size 54 regualr. that's 3xl. i can never
find the size that fits. they have the chinese and malaysians sizes thats for sure.
screw it! i will just wear a size 52 regular and to hell with it.

You may want to try Cabelas or a similar hunting/fishing focused retailer. They tend to have the very large sizes that more hiking and similar focused stores do not have.

For a similar price, this one comes up to 5XL (wow) and looks to be akin to a Montbell light down coat:

I have never used Cabelas gear before, but I understand it is pretty rugged. The down coats aren't the lightest probably, but I can't picture them being too heavy because it is down and nylon after all.

Sportsman's Guide is a discount place that sells military surplus, overstock and hunting supplies. They often carry larger sizes. This jack is 700 fill (very good!) and comes in 3XL:

FNARG!!! Gosh, I go and spend money on a Patangonia lightweight down jacket, and suddenly everyone is posting lots of awesome down jackets that cost half the price. Grrrr.

The only thing I can add is the cheaper jackets are quilted which means the insulation thickness is nearly 0 at the stitches(cold spots). The more expensive jackets are baffled which means a more constant thickness like sleeping bags.
