Default Solitude Loop Trail, WY: My Experience

It's not a very well-known trail outside of the local area but the 55+ mile Solitude Loop Trail in Wyoming's Cloud Peak Wilderness (Bighorn National Forest) is well worth a look. I'm a slow hiker (I like to enjoy the scenery) I finished it in 5 1/2 days. It would have been less if I hadn't had to hike out and back in 12.5 miles to replace a frozen water filter.

If anyone cares to read about it, I just posted my journal from the trip on my blog:

I'd highly recommend this time of year for this trail...no earlier because of the mosquitoes and biting flies in most years. This was a dry year so probably could have gone earlier without too many insects. Best window for this trail is early August to early September.

The nice thing about this trail...the lack of people in most places. I only saw/met people in a handful of places, other than that I saw no one. While I am loathe to advertise such a secluded and wild place on the internet I think most people on WB crave what I do...peace, quiet and solitude for backpacking. It's tough enough to get to so not too worried about the masses congregating here.

You could shorten it with a single entry.
    WYOMING

    DuneElliot,
Thank you. I need to get busy. Wyoming has so much to offer.

I'd like to hike it again, but really want to figure out the missing trail first. It sucks when you can't trust a map or a book or a GPS!

It is gorgeous. I'd like to do the Wind River Range too, but I'm not hiking in grizzly country alone!!!

I was going to ask.... I think this Solitude Loop is NOT in Grizzly habitat, correct? FWIW, most of the Winds are technically in Grizzly range, but I believe they are extremely rare down south in the winds. Not that "extremely rare" is a perfect situation....

Correct. We have black bears but they are pretty shy. I've seen more in the lower foothills than I ever have in the higher elevations. I carry bear spray and sometimes hang my food, but they aren't really a concern. The only thing I worry about in the Bighorns is startling one when I'm alone, or coming between a mother and cubs...other than that, they aren't a problem for me.

If you don't hang your food, what do you do with it?

Most of the time I hang it, but on the rare occasion I don't...where chipmunks were more of a risk than bears, I just put it under the awning. I also left it under a tree one night too.

Thanks. I was just wondering. I'm thinking of going up to Mirror Lake this weekend.
