Default Bear theft at Deep Gap Shelter?

Read someone's entry on Trailjournals today (forgot to save the link and now I can't find it again) about a bear, to use the writer's words, that "ripped a pack off of a hiker". Don't know if they mean't ripped off in the literal sense or whether the bear just pilfered an unattended pack.

The journal entry said this took place at Deep Gap shelter last week and that rangers were warning folks 'bout Smoky.

Anybody got any more info on this?

Stealing Bears is a serious crime. In some states you can shoot them. Stealing them is right out.

Is that why the guy was on here asking about bear bagging last week? He went and stole a bear!

    1. I wonder how many years you get-if caught "Bear-napping".
    2. Old Smok'ys habit has grown beyond Pack-Sniffing, to Pack Tokin!
    3. One bear says to the other, Honey, I am tierd of Samon & Bee's, Lets get a packin!
Honestly - I did search, Google hasn't logged it yet.
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Am I the only one who thought the thread was called "Beer theft at Deep Gap"? Now that would be serious.

I don't know about you folks, but if I was going to steal a bear, I'd try to do it near an easily accessible road crossing or something. I think the bear thrashing around trying to get out of that bear bag might be pretty hard to carry for any distance.

Of course, you could just 'nap a cub, and then you wouldn't have any problem getting a full grown sow to follow you out of the woods.

As much as six years ago there were reports of bear hanging around near this shelter.

I was near there in November and there were postings about an aggressive bear between Rock Gap and Deep Gap (Too bad he didn't eat Hilton,).

That's about how long the notices have been posted, IIRC....

My son and I saw a large one there last summer.....we were stopping on the trail, waiting for others in our group to go down to the stream there to fill up their water bottles after lunch.

Luckily, it took off running as soon as it saw us, but it was BIG.

That area is real close to a bear sanctuary. I would image that there are alot of bears around those parts. I have never seen a bear, but I have come across several different hunters looking for thier bear hunting dogs.

Speaking of dogs...from a prior post:
"...I took a 7-day hike from Unicoi Gap (GA) all the way thru NC during the peak of bear gun season. It is a cultural tradition for large groups of hunters, fathers, sons, and grandsons, to hunt the North Carolina Mountains with their hounds. On Oct 15th I must have seen no less then 40 hunters and 100 hounds all using the trail to hunt the mountains they grew up in and hold so dear. I enjoyed, along with those men the sound of the hounds baying off in the valleys as they picked up the sent of their quarry. I felt like a guest in their house and acted accordingly. To a man they were a very courteous group and I stopped and talked with several groups over the 1st couple days of hunting season. I only heard 3 shots all week, so I would say over all they were only shooting when a target was clearly identified..."

Not to high jack this tread, but I have a German Shorthaired Pointer. They were bred to be an everything dog to the average german family (companion, protector, hunter/tracker of game, large and small). I love to train and work him on birds. There is nothing quite like the sight of a great dog working the fields/woods!!

Hmmm, good friend mine killed a real nice beer near there; on the Burton WMA; two years ago.
