Anybody know how many 60+ folks complete a thru each year? It must be at least 20 or so. Of course, this is just a SWAG?

You are never too old.
2022 is my absolute latest year, my retirement date is June 2021 and I've never wanted to SOBO. I will be 58 years old then and I would love to find a way to do it before that. If I thru hike before then I probably push retirement back to 2022 or 2023.
Lemni Skate away
The trail will save my life
isnt the world supposed to end in 2012? Thats at least what the history channel keeps telling me even though I am not sure how the history channel is predicting the future. I am shooting for 2012 if there is any chance of me getting the money together. It would be nice to get done the trail... be a bum for the few months and watch the world end from atop Katahdin or springer.
Let's see, predictions for 2025 anyone?
1/ Trail will be 2240 miles long (added switchbacks)
2/ Bridge across the Kennebec
3/ Hidden cameras in every shelter and road crossing (what do they call it? CCTV?)
4/ Internet access at every point along the trail with blinking lights on your PDA (or whatever they choose to call computers by then) for all your friend's locations live.
5/ Dehydrated beer will be the craze that year.
6/ Fees for all camping (per night) Probably a standard $27.00 a night or something like that.
7/ Sleeping bags will have thermostats to dial in your comfort level
8/ Baltimore Jack will be attempting the first wheelchair hike of the trail
9/ Lone Wolf will be his support crew complete with battery change at every road crossing
10/ Wolves will be what everyone is afraid of as the bears and moose will be mild in comparison.
Don't let your fears stand in the way of your dreams
Wait I'm in this class also, can't wait to retirement, already told the wife I see ya in six months or so. Now the only planning thing to decide is SOBO or NOBO
Would you be offended if I told you to
TAKE A HIKE!

Love this thread. I have already calculated I retire at 55 in 2016 December so hope to be in the class of 2017 at age 55. My hope. Dehydrated beer would be nice. Shelters are nasty but I will use one in bad weather. I am not peeing in a bottle unless I have to. My hair will be white by then so forget dreads and maybe by then I will learn how to really post a photograph on the computer. And I hope there are still things such as bounce boxes, hostels, trail angels and hikers who hiked way back when for good advice and fun stories to share.
But through eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday
I'm so confused, I'm not sure if I lost my horse or found a rope.
Count me in. 2025 is just right for me.
No. Before my time. I'm not that old!
I was thinking 2017 or 2018 for my first attempt...but by 2025 my son will be 17, finishing his junior year in high school...could probably do section hikes in the summer. If I encourage him to graduate a semester early, though, 2026 would be the perfect year for us to do a thru hike together. Let the brainwashing commence.
What's the weather like in Virginia in 2025?
That would be about 13 years after my NOBO (2012) - I may be rested up by then. Can I try for a second thru?

I have a feeling that no one will be around in 2025 to hike the trail. there will just be cockroaches, twinkies, and whatever else can withstand nuclear winter.
